Costa Rica, al igual que muchos pa\u00edses alrededor del mundo, est\u00e1n uniendo esfuerzos por tratar de mitigar la huella ambiental ocasionada por el hombre. A trav\u00e9s de organismos como la ONU, se han centrado esfuerzos en reducir la acidificaci\u00f3n, la sobre explotaci\u00f3n pesquera y la contaminaci\u00f3n por pl\u00e1sticos. As\u00ed como mecanismos que buscan reducir y <a href=\"https:\/\/onesea.org\/en\/blog\/oceanos-saludables\/564-toneladas-desechos-plasticos\/\">eliminar el consumo de pl\u00e1stico de un solo uso.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Estudios cient\u00edficos liderados por la costarricense oriunda de Lim\u00f3n, Mar\u00eda Arias, revelan una preocupante caracter\u00edstica encontrada en los micropl\u00e1sticos, que podr\u00eda amenazar<strong> la salud humana del planeta<\/strong>. Seg\u00fan los resultados de la investigaci\u00f3n de la limonense desarrollado en Alemania como parte de su tesis de grado, <strong>los micropl\u00e1sticos<\/strong> son guaridas perfectas para que bacterias resistentes a antibi\u00f3ticos, se desarrollen e intercambien genes con otras bacterias, volvi\u00e9ndolas m\u00e1s fuertes e invulnerables.<\/p>\n<h2>\u00bfQu\u00e9 es un Micropl\u00e1stico?<\/h2>\n<p>Con el paso del tiempo, <strong>el pl\u00e1stico de consumo diario<\/strong>, tiende a degradarse, liberando residuos milim\u00e9tricos llamados micropl\u00e1sticos. Tras su uso, su desecho, la exposici\u00f3n a la radiaci\u00f3n ultravioleta, as\u00ed como la acci\u00f3n del agua, favorece para que el pl\u00e1stico se convierta en fragmentos desde menos de 5 mil\u00edmetros hasta proporciones nanom\u00e9tricas, es decir una millon\u00e9sima parte de un mil\u00edmetro.<\/p>\n<p>Estas <a href=\"https:\/\/onesea.org\/en\/blog\/oceanos-saludables\/rios-aportan-95-plasticos-oceanos\/\">part\u00edculas pl\u00e1sticas llegan a r\u00edos, lagos, oc\u00e9anos<\/a> y diversos cuerpos de agua, generando serias consecuencias ambientales. Sin importar si son bacterias de especies distintas, estas pueden compartirse genes que les ayuden a sobrevivir mejor. B\u00e1sicamente, se comparten las herramientas adquiridas de manera individual y as\u00ed ambas tendr\u00e1n mejores armas de sobrevivencia.<\/p>\n<p>De esta forma, bacterias que han logrado desarrollar defensas contra antibi\u00f3ticos, est\u00e1n transmitiendo el gen a otras para poder producir una prote\u00edna que degrada esa sustancia que las mata. Seg\u00fan la investigaci\u00f3n de doctorado de Mar\u00eda Arias, qui\u00e9n adem\u00e1s trabaja, para el <a href=\"http:\/\/www.iret.una.ac.cr\">Instituto Regional de Estudios sobre Sustancias T\u00f3xicas de la Universidad Nacional de Costa Rica<\/a>, el pl\u00e1stico tiene una superficie con caracter\u00edsticas muy aptas para que las bacterias sobrevivan, reproduzcan y evoluciones juntas.<\/p>\n<p>Las superficies pl\u00e1sticas en especial en las partes con mayor relieve, son condiciones perfectas para que las bacterias de adhieran. Al llegar a un cuerpo de agua, estas se van uniendo unas con otras hasta crear una biopel\u00edcula. Esta biopel\u00edcula, es todo un <strong>microecosistemas<\/strong> donde las bacterias intercambian comida, se comunican y comparten genes. Volvi\u00e9ndose resistente a medicamentos.<\/p>\n<p>Lo m\u00e1s preocupante de esto, es que los micropl\u00e1sticos son extremadamente resistentes, perdurando en el ambiente por cientos de a\u00f1os. Adem\u00e1s, tiene una capacidad pr\u00e1cticamente ilimitada de viajar, convirti\u00e9ndolos en <a href=\"https:\/\/onesea.org\/en\/blog\/oceanos-saludables\/gobernanza-global-oceanos\/\">un problema sin fronteras<\/a>. Una vez en el oc\u00e9ano, estos pueden viajar por todo el planeta, llevando bacterias consigo, volvi\u00e9ndose cada vez m\u00e1s fuertes. No por nada las bacterias han sido tan eficientes colonizando el planeta.<\/p>\n<p>Esta es una raz\u00f3n m\u00e1s por la cual no podemos bajar la guardia ni un solo segundo en la lucha por la protecci\u00f3n de nuestros oc\u00e9anos y el planeta. Tenemos que redoblar esfuerzos por reducir nuestra propia huella ambiental y eliminar por completo y de una vez por todas el consumo de pl\u00e1stico de un solo uso.
